Learn How to Crochet a Snowflake

Learn how to crochet a snowflake with my step-by-step instructions and video tutorial. These festive motifs are really versatile and perfect for your Christmas table decorations, present toppers or just as a pretty ornament on your tree.

You can create so many different looks with this pattern by simply switching up your yarn, you can use any weight that will alter the size (please use the recommended hook size found on the belly band of the yarn) and any colour, these look great in a sparkly DK!

terms and abbreviations

  • Chain (ch): Yarn over, pull through one loop on hook
  • Slip Stitch (ss): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull yarn through stitch and loop on hook
  • Double Crochet (dc): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
  • Treble Crochet tr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

crochet snowflake pattern

Start with a slip knot on hook.

Foundation chain: Ch 6, insert hook into first chain and slip stitch to form a circle.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first tr here and throughout), tr in circle, [ch 2, 2 tr in circle] 5 times, ch 2, ss into third ch of beg ch-3. <6 clusters of 2 tr each>

Round 2: Ch 3, work (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) into each ch-2 space around omitting last treble in last space and ss to beg ch-3. <12 tr, 6 ch-2 spaces>

Round 3: *Ch 3, work 3 tr into next ch-2 space, ch 3, work ss into space between next 2 clusters of trebles (this is in the space where you did not ch 2 in the previous round); repeat from * around.  <6 clusters of 3 tr each>

Round 4: *Work 3 dc in next ch-3 space, (next stitches will be worked into the top of the three treble stitches) ss in first tr, ch 3, (ss, ch 4, ss) in second tr, ch 3, ss in third tr, work 3 dc in next ch-3 space; repeat from * around, ss in first dc, ch 1 and cut yarn leaving a tail.

Be sure to pull the tops of your snowflake at the corners to help it look like a snowflake. Use needle to weave in the end.

  • Yarn: you can use any weight yarn however I have used DK weight yarn

Tools

  • Hook: 4mm
  • Scissors
  • Darning Needle

Instructions

    1. Starting with a slip knot on your hook
    2. Foundation chain: Ch 6, insert hook into first chain and slip stitch to form a circle.
    3. Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first tc here and throughout), tc in circle, [ch 2, 2 tc in circle] 5 times, ch 2, ss into third ch of beg ch-3. <6 clusters of 2 tc each>
