How to crochet the Feyre Cowl with my free step-by-step pattern and video tutorial to guide you every step of the way.

Whether you’re looking for a cosy layer to keep the chill away or a handmade accessory that adds texture and personality to your wardrobe, a crochet cowl is always a great choice.

In this post, I’m sharing a cowl design that’s perfect for mindful stitching, beautiful drape, and everyday wear, ideal for curling up with your favourite yarn and hook; introducing the Feyre Cowl.

  • Skill Level: Beginner
  • Pattern is worked holding the two strands of yarn together.
  • It is made in a flat oblong before joining the foundation row and
    final row to form a circle.
  • Light Blocking might be required once joined.

Terms & Abbreviations

  • Stitch(s): st(s)
  • Slip Stitch(s): ss(s): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.
  • Chain(s): ch(s): Yarn over, pull through loop on the hook.
  • Repeat: rep:
  • Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
  • Treble Crochet(s): tr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Special stitches

  • Shell Stitch (ShSt): Work 5 tr into indicated stitch.

Stitch counts are shown at the end of a row in angle brackets <> and are only provided when the stitch count changes.

You are viewing this pattern in UK terms.

  • Foundation: Ch 32
  • Row 1: Dc in second ch from hook (skipped ch does not count as st), *skip 2 chs, work a ShSt into next st, skip 2 chs, dc; rep from * across. Turn. <6 dc, 5 ShSt>
  • Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as st here or throughout), 3 tr in first st, *skip 2 sts, dc in middle tr of next ShSt, skip 2 sts, ShSt in next dc; rep from * across, working 3 tr in last dc. Turn. <5 dc, 4 ShSt, 6 tr>
  • Row 3: Ch 1, dc in first st, skip 2 sts, *ShSt in next dc, skip 2 sts, dc in middle tr of next ShSt, skip 2 sts; rep from * across, working last dc in last st. Turn. <6 dc, 5 ShSt>
  • Rows 4-51: Rep Rows 2 and 3
  • Row 52: Rep row 2

Joining

  • For this section of the pattern, when working into the ‘dc and ShSt’ you will be working into the underside of that stitch. The underside of the ShSt is the st that all of the trs are worked into.
  • Working through both thicknesses, insert hook into the final row and the foundation chain, ss into the first st and first dc of foundation, (ss in next st and ch-sp of foundation) twice. *Ss in next st and ShSt of foundation, (ss in next st and ch-sp of foundation) twice. Ss in next st and dc of foundation, (ss in next st and ch-sp of foundation) twice; rep from * three more times. Ss in next st and ShSt of foundation, (ss in next st and ch-sp of foundation) twice. Ss in last dc.
  • Fasten off and sew in ends.
  • Light blocking may be required.
