  • Stitch(s): st(s)
  • Slip Stitch(s): ss(s): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.
  • Chain(s): ch(s): Yarn over, pull through loop on the hook.
  • Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
  • Double Treble Crochet(s): dtr(s): Yarn over hook twice, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have four loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Pattern Notes

  • Written in UK terms but switchable to US crochet terms above
  • Skill level: Beginner
  • You will be making a long thin piece of fabric which will then be joined at the short ends to form the ear warmer.
  • Ensure you have worked at least 3 rows before checking the width of the project as the fabric will widen after working the first few rows. The bobbles will be formed when working on the wrong side of the work.

Ear Warmer

Ch 42 (46, 52, 58, 62)

Row 1: Working in back bump, dc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. <41 (45, 51, 57, 61) sts>

Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as st here and throughout), dc in first 3 (3, 3, 5, 5) sts, (dtr in next st, dc in next st) across until you have 4 (4, 4, 6, 6) sts remaining, dtr in next st, dc in last 3 (3, 3, 5, 5) sts. Turn. <23 (25, 28, 33, 35) dc, 18 (20, 23, 24, 26) dtr>

Slim Version ONLY

Rows 3-5: Ch 1, dc in each st across. Turn.

Rows 6 & 7: Repeat rows 2 & 3.

Fasten off leaving a long tail end for sewing.

Wide Version ONLY

Row 3: Ch 1, dc in each st across. Turn.

Rows 4 & 5: Repeat rows 2 & 3.

Rows 6 & 7: Ch 1, dc in each st across. Turn.

Rows 8-11: Repeat rows 2 & 3 twice more.

Fasten off leaving a long tail end for sewing.

Constructing

Fold short row ends together with right sides facing each other so that half of the short ends are touching and the other halves are overhanging.

Wrap each side of the overhang around the opposite end.

After folding the row ends together you will have 4 thicknesses.

Using long tail end, sew the 4 thicknesses together using whip stitch. Fasten off and sew in ends.

Twist the work so the right side is facing to reveal the knot.
