How to Crochet Maplewood Bauble: FREE Pattern

Terms & Abbreviations

  • Stitch(s): st(s)
  • Slip Stitch(s): ss(s): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.
  • Chain(s): ch(s): Yarn over, pull through loop on the hook.
  • Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
  • Half Treble Crochet(s):htr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining three loops.

Special Stitches

  • Beginning Feather Stitch (BFS): Yarn over, insert hook into first ch-sp, yarn over, pull up a loop in line with loops on the hook (3 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook into ch-1 sp or skipped st two rows below, yarn over, pull up a loop in line with loops on the hook (5 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook in next ch-1 sp, yarn over and pull up a loop in line with loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on the hook.
  • Feather Stitch (FeS): Yarn over, insert hook into same ch-1 sp as last part of previous BFS or FeS, yarn over and pull up a loop in line with loops on the hook (3 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook into ch-1 sp or skipped st two rows below, yarn over and pull up a loop in line with loops on the hook (5 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook in next ch-1 sp, yarn over and pull up a loop in line with loops on the hook, yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on the hook.

Convert Pattern Terms

Here you can quickly switch between UK and US crochet terms. This will make following the pattern easier as all terms will be converted to your preferred version.

Pattern Notes

  • Written in UK terms but it is switchable to US terms above.
  • The base rounds of each bauble will be worked in joined rounds without turning. Once the feather stitch is established, you will be turning your work.

Gauge

  • Small bauble will measure 5.75 cm (2.2 inch) approx. after 4 rounds.

Completed Size and Yarn Quantities

  • Small Bauble: 21.5 cm (8.5 inch) / 3 yds

Maplewood Bauble: Free Crochet Pattern

Small Bauble

  • Make magic ring
  • Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a st here and throughout), work 6 dc into ring. Pull ring closed. Join with ss to first st. <6 sts>
  • Round 2: Ch 1, work 2 htr in each st around. Join with ss to first st. <12 sts>
  • Round 3: Ch 1, htr in first st, (2 htr in next st, htr in next st) around until 1 st remains, work 2 htr in last st. Join with ss to first st. <18 sts>
  • Round 4: Ch 1, htr in first 2 sts, (2 htr in next st, htr in next 2 sts) around until 1 st remains, work 2 htr in last st. Join with ss to first st. <24 sts>
  • Round 5: Ch 1, htr in first 3 sts, (2 htr in next st, htr in next 3 sts) around until 1 st remains, work 2 htr in last st. Join with ss to first st. <30 sts>
  • Round 6: Ch 1, htr in first st, (ch 1, skip next st, htr in next st) around until you have 1 st remaining. Ch 1, skip a st . Join with ss to first st.
  • Rounds 7-12: BEF, ch 1. (FeS, ch 1) around. Join with ss to first st. Turn. <15 Fes, 15 ch-sps>
  • Fasten off leaving a long tail end for sewing.

Finishing

Place the plastic bauble inside the crochet piece. Using a darning needle, weave the tail through every other st around the top opening and pull to close snugly around the bauble. Secure the tail.
Weave in any remaining ends.
