In this tutorial, you’ll find everything you need to create your own reusable crochet can cosy with a free step-by-step pattern and video tutorial in both right and left-handed versions.

Materials & Tools

Yarn: COTTAGE COTTON 60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic, #4 aran/worsted weight yarn. 100g (3.5oz), 190m (207yds).
Samples made in shades (Small) MC Chiffon 0007, CC Silver Sage 0004. (Tall) MC Blossom 0015, CC Chiffon 0007.
Hook: 5mm (US H-8)

Play With Colour

You can have fun playing around with your colourways for this project. For the small can cosy, I used the lighter colour as the main colour, then for the tall can cosy, I used the darker colour as the main colour. Each version gives a stunning effect but can look quite different. This stitch looks great using a yarigated or ombre yarn as the contrast colour too.

Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Special Stitches

Invisible Join: Cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail and thread onto darning needle. Insert under both loops of the first stitch, pull through, then insert back down through centre of the last stitch. Pull snug and weave in the end.
Standing Double Crochet(s): stdc(s): Slightly pull up working loop to the height of a double crochet, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Treble Crochet(s): tr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
V-Stitch(s): Vst(s): (Tr, ch 1, tr) in same space.
Granny Cluster(s): Three tr worked in one space.
Back Post Double Crochet(s): BPdc(s): Insert hook from back of work to the front, then from front to back around the post of the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is written in UK terms but is switchable to US terms above.
This project is worked from the bottom up, creating the base before working the main body.
Ch 1 at the beginning of the row/round does not count as a stitch.
You will be using an interlocking technique which means you will be joining the current and previous rounds when working the granny cluster rounds.
When working your V-stitches two rounds down, you will be working in front of the previous granny cluster round.
When working the interlocking rounds of the main body, you drop the colour not being used leaving a working loop. Always ensure your main colour (MC) is dropped to the front of the work and the contrast colour (CC) is dropped to the back.
Please read through the whole pattern before starting.

Gauge

Base measures 6.5cm (2.5inch) after round 5.

Completed Size

Measured laid flat and excluding base.

Small: W 11.5cm x H 11.5cm (4.5inch x 4.5inch)

Tall: W 11.5cm x 15cm (4.5inch x 6inch)

Yarn Quantites

Small Cosy uses approx 18g of MC and 15g of CC.

Tall cosy uses approx 28g of MC and 20g of CC.

Adjustments

You can adjust the base of the project depending on the size of the can you wish to cover by adding a stitch between each increase for each round. The important thing is that the base is slightly smaller than the can circumference.

You can also add as many rounds as needed for the height of the cosy, but be mindful that the final four rounds will measure around 2cm (0.75inch).

Base

Using MC, make MR.

1-4

Round 1: Work 6 dc in magic ring. Join with ss to first st. <6 dc>

Round 2: Ch 1 (does not count as st here or throughout). Work 2 dc in each st around. Join with ss to first st. <12 dc>

Round 3: Ch 1, dc in first st, 2 dc in next st. *Dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around. Join with ss to first st. <18 dc>

Round 4: Ch 1, dc in first 2 sts, 2 dc in next st. *Dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around. Join with ss to first st. <24 dc>

5-8

Round 5: Ch 1, dc in first 3 sts, 2 dc in next st. *Dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around. Join with ss to first st. <30 dc>

Main Body Setup

Round 6: Ch 1, BPdc in each st around. Join with ss to first st.

Round 7: Ch 1, dc in each st around. Join with ss to first st.

Main Body

Round 8: Ch 1, dc in first st, ch 2, skip 2 sts. *dc in next st, ch 2, skip 2 sts; rep from * around. Join with ss to first st. Pull up loop & remove hook. <10 dc, 10 ch- sps>

Always keep MC to the front.

Attach CC to ch-2 sp after the join.

9-11

Round 9: Ch 3 (counts as tr) 2tr in same sp, skip a st, *3tr in ch-sp (granny cluster made), skip a st; rep from * around. Join with ss to first st. Pull up loop & remove hook.

Always keep CC to the back.

Pick up MC.

Round 10: Ch 4 (counts as tr and ch-1), tr in same st. (Vst in next dc from round 8) around. Join with ss to third ch of beg ch-4. Pull up loop & remove hook.

Pick up CC.

Round 11: Working through both thicknesses around, work a sdc through the ch- sp of Vst from previous round and sp between granny clusters, work 2 tr in same sp. *3 tr in next Vst/cluster sp; rep from * around. Join with ss in top of sdc. Pull up loop & remove hook.

Pick up MC.

12 – finish

Round 12: Ch 4 (counts as tr and ch-1), tr in same st. (Vst in next sp between Vsts from two rows previous) around. Join with ss to third ch of beg ch-4. Pull up loop.

Small Cosy ONLY

Round 13-22: Rep round 11 & 12, five more times.

Fasten off CC.

With MC

Round 23: Working through both thicknesses, *dc in sp between Vsts and middle tr of granny cluster. 2 dc in Vst and sp between granny clusters; rep from * around. Join with ss in first st.

Round 24-26: St-dc in first st, dc in each st around. Join with ss to first st.

Round 27: Ch 2 (counts as ss and ch 1), (ss, ch 1) in each st around. Fasten off and join with invisible join to first ch. Sew in ends.

Tall Cosy ONLY

Round 13-30: Rep round 11 & 12, nine more times.

Fasten off CC.

With MC

Round 31: Working through both thicknesses, *dc in sp between Vsts and middle tr of granny cluster. 2 dc in Vst and sp between granny clusters; rep from * around. Join with ss in first st.

Round 32-34: St-dc in first st, dc in each st around. Join with ss to first st.

Round 35: Ch 2 (counts as ss and ch 1), (ss, ch 1) in each st around. Fasten off and join with invisible join to first ch. Sew in ends.
