CROCHET TERMS

Chain (ch): Yarn over, pull through one loop on hook

Double Crochet (dc): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through two loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through both loops.

Bobble: similar to working 4 treble crochet together in one stitch: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch or space, yarn over, draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through 2 loops (2 loops remain on hook), *yarn over, insert hook into same stitch, yarn over, draw up a loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * until you have 5 loops on hook, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.  At this point I like to pull down on the stitch, pulling the yarn tightly so that the bobble really pops out away from me.  We are working from the backside of the piece so the bobble should pop away from you.

Start with a slip knot on hook.

Foundation chain: Ch 19. (Be sure to work these chains not too tight and continue to move your non-hook hand up the chain as you make the piece longer.)

Row 1: Ch 1 (counts as a st), dc in third ch from hook and in each ch across. <19 dc>

Row 2: Ch 2, turn, skip dc at base of ch-2 (beginning ch-2 counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in next st and each st across (Don’t forget to work the last dc into the beginning chain from the previous row).

Row 3-4: Repeat row 2.

Row 5: Ch 2, turn, (glance at the chart to see how many stitches are before the bobble), skip dc at base of ch-2, dc in next 8 sts, bobble in next st, dc in each st to end. <18 dc, 1 bobble>

Row 6 and all even numbered rows: Repeat row 2. <19 dc> Pay attention to the stitches so that you don’t miss any.  You will be working into each bobble stitch, it will look like an elongated stitch at the top of each bobble.

Row 7:  Ch 2, turn, dc in next 6 sts, *bobble in next st, dc in next st; repeat from * twice more (there are 3 bobbles made), dc in each st to end of row. <16 dc, 3 bobbles>

Row 9: Ch 2, turn, dc in next 4 sts, *bobble in next st, dc in next st; repeat from * 4 times to make a total of 5 bobbles, dc in each st to end of row. <14 dc, 5 bobbles>

Row 11: Ch 2, turn, dc in next 2 sts, *bobble in next st, dc in next st; repeat from * 6 times to make a total of 7 bobbles, dc in each st to end of row. <12 dc, 7 bobbles>

Row 13: Repeat row 11.

Row 15: Ch 2, turn, dc in next 4 sts, *bobble in next st, dc in next st, bobble in next st,* dc in next 3 sts, repeat from * to * once, dc in each st to end of row.  <15 dc, 4 bobbles>

Rows 16-19: Repeat row 2.

You might want to block this piece, pinning the corners onto a blocking board or surface.  Blocking will help the corners and edges lay flat and allow the bobbles to pop out.  You could spray lightly with water to help with the blocking.
