There’s just something about January, isn’t there? We’re all in the post-Christmas fug, nerves (and finances!) are a bit tight and the weather is dire. I’m a big fan of setting new goals and targets and seeing January as a fresh start. A blank page. But, even with a healthy heaping of optimism, there’s no denying we all need a little extra care when 1st of the 1st rolls around. That’s why, over the course on January I’m going to be sharing patterns, blogs and tips on keeping your spirits up, while indulging in a bit of self care. We all know crochet is good for the soul – so why not make it good for your body and mind too? I’m beginning self care month by sharing a revamped version of one of my old favourite patterns – the crochet mood blanket.

You can Crochet with Bella Coco

If you’re not sure what a crochet mood blanket is, let me explain.

The idea is that every day you crochet a single granny square using the yarn that corresponds to your mood for the day. For example, if you’re feeling sad you might use blue and if you’re happy, perhaps pink. It’s fun to personalise and pick out which colours represent your moods.

Depending on what size you decide to create – you’ll likely have some days where you don’t make a square and can work on joining the squares or creating a border.

I made my blanket to be 16 x 22 making it 352 squares in total. You could also try:

15 × 24

16 × 22

18 × 20

19 × 19

If you need a guide, here are the colours I used for my original crochet mood blanket. However, it’s worth adding that I think I should have chosen more moods for ‘happy’. One just doesn’t seem to cover it!

I do love this crochet mood blanket though – it’s such a lovely memory, as well as being cosy. Being able to look over at the colourful granny squares and remember specific moments in time is really special.

A collection of granny squares in shades of pink, purple and cream are displayed on a white background.

I added a further cream border to each square in order to define the colours, but this is optional.

To add the cream border:

Connect your yarn in a corner space. ch4, 3tr into next chain space, ch1, 3tr, ch1, 3tr, ch1, 3tr, ch3, 3tr (into same corner), ch1, 3tr, ch1,

3tr, ch1, 3tr, ch1, 3tr, ch3, 3tr (into same corner), ch1, 3tr, ch1, 3tr, ch1, 3tr, ch1, 3tr, ch3, 3tr (into same corner), ch1, 3tr, ch1, 3tr, ch1, 3tr,

ch1, 3tr, ch3, 2tr, insert yarn into third chain from hook and ss.

Squares can be attached using ‘join as you go’ method or by crocheting them together using double crochet (US single crochet).

To add a shell border:

Work one double crochet between each stitch all the way around the blanket to create a base. Work 3 double stitches into the corner sections. Connect your first stitch to your last.

Now, working in each of the double crochets: *5 Treble Crochets into the 2nd space from the hook, skip a space, slip stitch.*

Repeat all the way around until the beginning.

NOTE: Sometimes you may need to skip extra spaces in the corners.

While I don’t have a video tutorial for this blanket, I have a trio of tutorials that can help you create your own blanket.

You could also further customise your mood blanket by using a different type of granny square. Why not try the Mitered Square for a fun shape? This sweet little square will create a wonderfully modern, graphic blanket.

Or you could customise the Granny Square Heart and change just the colour of the heart.

This would really depend on how big you wish the blanket to be. It would also depend on the yarn you are using, your hook size and your personal tension 🙂

This is really difficult to answer as it would depend on your personal tension. Maybe you could done one square and then work it out from there 🙂
