Ways to Use Granny Rectangles

• Blankets and Throws: This is the most classic use for a granny rectangle. You can start with a small foundation and keep working your rounds until you have a blanket big enough to snuggle under.
• Bags and Totes: Fold a rectangle in half, add a lining and some handles, and you’ve got yourself a gorgeous granny-style bag!
• Scarves and Wraps: By simply adjusting your starting chain length, you can create a long, narrow granny rectangle scarf.
• Home Décor: Smaller rectangles can be turned into table runners, cushion covers, or even placemats.
• Wearables: If you’re feeling adventurous, granny rectangles can even form the basis of cardigans, ponchos, or sweaters.

Foundation: Ch 17.

Round 1: 2 tr in third ch from hook (skipped 2-ch counts as tr), 3 ch, 3 tr in next ch, *1 ch, skip 2 ch, 3 tr in next ch, repeat from * until 1 ch remains, 3 ch, 3 tr in last ch, 3 ch, turn work so you are working on the underside of the foundation chain, skip first ch, [3 tr in next ch, 1 ch, skip 2 ch] to end, working final rep as 3 tr in next ch, 3 ch, join with ss into top of 3-ch. Turn. (12 clusters, 4 3-ch sps, 8 1-ch sps.)

Round 2: 3 ch (counts as tr here and throughout), [2 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr] in 3-ch sp, 1 ch, *3 tr in next ch sp, 1 ch, repeat from * to 3-ch sp, [3 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr in next 3-ch sp, 1 ch] twice, [3 tr in next ch-sp, 1 ch] to 3-ch sp, [3 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr] in 3-ch sp, 1 ch, join with ss into top of 3-ch. Turn. (16 clusters, 4 3-ch sps, 12 1-ch sps.)

Round 3: 3 ch, 2 tr in 1-ch sp, 1 ch, [3 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr] in 3-ch sp, *1 ch, [3 tr in next ch-sp, 1 ch] to 3-ch sp, [3 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr] in 3-ch sp, repeat from * to end, join with ss into top of 3-ch. Turn. (20 clusters, 4 3-ch sps, 16 1-ch sps.)

Round 4: 3 ch, 2 tr in 1-ch sp, [1 ch, 3 tr] to corner 3-ch sp, [3 ch, 3 tr] in same ch sp as previous st, *[1 ch, 3 tr in next 1-ch sp, 1 ch] to 3-ch sp, [3 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr] in 3-ch sp, 1 ch, repeat from * two more times, [3 tr in next 1-ch sp, 1 ch] to end, join with ss into top of 3-ch. Turn. (24 clusters, 4 3-ch sps, 20 1-ch sps.)

Repeat Round 4 until desired size.

Fasten off and sew in ends.
