Christmas Tree

Are you looking for sustainable ways to wrap your Christmas gifts this year? How about decorating your presents with Crochet which can then be recycled as Tree decorations? These little Christmas trees make the perfect present topper and are quick and easy to make.

Materials and tools needed

Yarn: Stylecraft Special DK (100% Acrylic, 323 yds per 3.5oz) Meadow

Hook: 5mm hook or size needed to obtain gauge

Scissors

Darning Needle

Gauge: Complete Size: 14.5cm (w) by 14cm (h)  Gauge isn’t really needed for a piece this small, but approximate finished size is recommended.

Crochet Terms

Abbreviations: Pattern written in UK terms

Chain (ch): Yarn over, pull through one loop on hook

Treble Crochet (tr): Yarn over, Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through two loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Slip Stitch (ss): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull yarn through stitch and loop on hook

Cluster: grouping of 3 tr

Space(s) (sp(s)

Notes

Pattern is worked in the round for 3 rounds to create tree, then one short row to create tree trunk.

Beginning ch does count as a st.

Christmas Tree Pattern

Foundation chain: Ch 3, sl st in third ch from hook to form a circle.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as a tr), 2 tr in center of circle, [ch 2, 3 tr in center of circle] twice, ch 2, sl st into top of beg ch-3. <triangle of 3 clusters and 3 ch-2 sps>

Round 2: Ch 3, *ch 2, (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * twice, omitting final tr of last cluster and join to third ch of beg ch-3. <6 3-tr clusters, 6 ch-2 sps>

Round 3: Ch 2 (counts as first tr), (4 tr, ch 2, sl st) in first ch-2 sp,  ch 2, (4 tr, ch 2, 4 tr) in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, sl st in second tr of next cluster, ch 2, 4 tr in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, sl st in second tr of next cluster, ch 2, (4 tr, ch 2, 4 tr) in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, sl st in third tr of next cluster, ch 2, 4 tr in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, sl st in third tr of next cluster, ch 2, (4 tr, ch 2, 4 tr) in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, sl st into base of beg ch-2.

Row 4: Raise up loop on hook a little to sl st into top ch of beg ch-2 from round 3, ch 2, tr into each of next 4 tr, tr into top of next ch-2. <6 tr>

Fasten off and weave in ends.
