Cross Stitch Double (US Single) Crochet

Learn how to crochet this cross stitch double crochet stitch. This is such a simple stitch which offers a truly unique look. This stitch is more effective when using heavier weight yarn (aran weight and above). Be aware though, this stitch will ONLY work in the round making it great for the following type of projects..

Yarn used: Paintbox Simply Chunky 305
Hook size used: 6mm (US J)

This pattern gives you the basic principles for the cross single/double crochet, designed to help you create your own projects.

Crochet Terms

Chain(s): ch(s): Yarn over, pull through

Cross Stitch Double Crochet(s): csdc(s):  Insert hook into stitch, yarn under, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Cross Stitch Double Crochet Stitch Pattern

Foundation: Chain in any number of stitches and join to form a circle

Row 1: Ch 1 (does not class as a st), csdc in each stitch. Ss in first st.

Repeat Row 1 until you reach your desired height

      You’re welcome To make the circle you are making a slip stitch (insert hook, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook) into the chain at the very end 🙂

        Hi, does it matter which side i insert the hook when making the slip stitch?

          You should insert the hook in the same way as you would when making a normal stitch

      Hi Kahlea You can only work this stitch in the round, so while it’s great for making bags and cowls but unfortunately not flat pieces like baby blankets. If you like the look of this stitch I would have a look at some of my other tutorials such as grit stitch which has a lovely texture too

      Yes you could use this for a border provided you keep working in the same direction, and don’t turn your work over after each round

    Thankyou for all of your tutorials I have learnt many patterns thanks to you. I am 58 and only learnt last year. I have learnt the waffle stitch which I have made many blankets(my favourite), now cross stitch single crochet. Love the tutorials. Thanks again
