Learn how to crochet a pumpkin following my free, beginner friendly step by step pattern and video tutorial. As the leaves turn from lush greens to fiery reds and burnt oranges, pumpkins emerge. autumn colour inspiration

I have pulled together some lovely autumn shades by Style Craft Yarns available on Love Crafts for some inspiration however you don’t have to stick to ‘traditional’ autumn shades, be creative and select yarn colours that suit your home decor or personal taste. See the yarn swatch boards below for some of my favourites.

TERMS & ABBREVIATIONS

Chain(s): ch(s): Yarn over, pull through loop on the hook.

Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Double Crochet 2 Together (dc2tog): Insert hook into next st, yarn over, pull through (2 loops on hook), insert hook into next st, yarn over, pull through (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all loops on hook.

Slip stitch (sl-st): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through both stitch and loop on hook.

CROCHET PUMPKIN PATTERN

Crochet Pumpkin
  • For the Pumpkin, Using orange yarn
  • Working each round in circles 
  • Foundation: Ch2 
  • Round 1: 10dc into first chain 
  • Round 2: 2dc into each dc (20 stitches) 
  • Round 3: dc into each stitch 
  • Round 4: 2dc into each stitch (40 stitches) 
  • Round 5-8: dc into each stitch (40 stitches in each round) 
  • Round 9: dc2tgr (20 stitches) 
  • Round 10: dc in each stitch (20 stitches) 

*Start stuffing the pumpkin* 

  • Round 11: dc2tog (10 stitches) 

*Further stuff the pumpkin if needed* 

  • Round 12: dc2tog (5 stitches) dc into opposite stitch in order to close the hole.
  • Tie off leaving an extra long tail (30cm or more) 
  • Attach a darning needle to your end. Thread the needle from the bottom of the pumpkin to the top. Thread the needle from the bottom of the pumpkin to the top again and pull tight on the yarn (this will make your indentations) Continue this 6 times making the spaces even, fasten off and sew in ends.
  • For the leaves: Using green yarn 
  • Foundation: Chain 2 
  • Round 1: 8dc into first chain and connect 
  • Round 2: *chain 3, skip a stitch, ss into next stitch* 4 times. 
  • Connect and tie off leaving a long end. 
  • Sew onto the pumpkin and hide your ends.

How to Crochet a Pumpkin

Learn how to crochet a pumpkin following my free, beginner friendly step by step pattern and video tutorial.

Materials

  • Yarn: You can use any yarn and recommend hook size. I have used Stylecraft Special DK in the video tutorial in 2 colours: Colour A: Jaffa and Colour B: Meadow. In the images I have used Paintbox Simply Aran in colours: Colour A: Vintage Pink and Colour B: Slate Grey.

Tools

  • Hook: 4.5mm or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Darning Needle
  • Scissors

Instructions

    1. For the Pumpkin, Using orange yarn
    2. Working each round in circles
    3. Foundation: Ch2
    4. Round 1: 10dc into first chain
    5. Round 2: 2dc into each dc (20 stitches)
    6. Round 3: dc into each stitch
    7. Round 4: 2dc into each stitch (40 stitches)
    8. Round 5-8: dc into each stitch (40 stitches in each round)
    9. Round 9: dc2tgr (20 stitches)
    10. Round 10: dc in each stitch (20 stitches) *Start stuffing the pumpkin*
    11. Round 11: dc2tog (10 stitches)
