Whether you’re looking to expand your crochet skills or try a new technique, this interlocking crochet bag pattern is a fun, exciting pattern to try. In this post, you’ll find a free step-by-step pattern and video tutorial in both right and left-handed versions. PLUS I have two matching accessories to complement your crossbody bag. And I know you might be thinking, “this looks too tricky for me”, BUT, I promise it’s easier then it looks.

Materials & Tools

Yarn: COTTAGE COTTON 60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic, #4 aran/worsted weight yarn. 100g (3.5oz), 190m (207yds).
Sample made in shades MC Stone Blue 0002, CC Chiffon 0007
Hook: 4.5mm (US 7)
Darning Needle
Measuring Tape
Stitch markers x2
Scissors
Binding Clips (or pins)
19mm Snap Fastener (optional)

Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Treble Crochet(s): tr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.]
Invisible Join: Cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail and thread onto darning needle. Insert under both loops of the first stitch, pull through, then insert back down through centre of the last stitch. Pull snug and weave in the end.

Special Stitches

Standing Double Crochet(s): st-dc(s): Slightly pull up working loop to the height of a double crochet, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Stacked Double Crochet in back loop only: SBLO dc: Follow instructions for sdc working into the back loop only.
V-Stitch(s): Vst(s): (Tr, ch 1, tr) in same space.
Granny Cluster(s): Three tr worked in one space.
Back Post Double Crochet(s): BPdc(s): Insert hook from back of work to the front, then from front to back around the post of the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Stacked Double Crochet(s): sdc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops. Insert hook into the front leg of the stitch which is furthest away from the hook). Yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Here you can quickly switch between UK and US crochet terms. This will make following the pattern easier as all terms will be converted to your preferred version.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is written in UK terms but is switchable to US terms above.
You will be working in rows to make the base of the bag before working in the round to form the main bag section.
Ch 1 at the beginning of the row/round does not count as a stitch.
You will be using an interlocking technique which means you will be joining the current and previous rounds when working the granny cluster rounds.
When working your V-stitches two rounds down, you will be working in front of the previous granny cluster round.
When working the interlocking rounds of the main body, you drop the colour not being used leaving a working loop. Always ensure your main colour (MC) is dropped to the front of the work and the contrast colour (CC) is dropped to the back.
Please read through the whole pattern before starting.

Gauge

Base of Crossbody (rows 1-40) measures 5cm x 23cm (2in x 9in)

Completed Size

Measured laid flat and excluding handles: W 33cm x H 33cm (13inch x 13inch).

Yarn Quantites

Crossbody: uses approx 305yds of MC (2 balls) and 198yds of CC (1 ball).

Base

Using MC, ch 9

Row 1: Working in back bump, dc in second ch from hook and across. Turn. <8 dc>

Rows 2-39: Ch 1 (does not count as st here or throughout), dc in each st across. Turn.

Row 40: Ch 1, dc in each st across. Do not turn.

Main Body Setup

Round 1: Ch 1, rotate work to work down row end, *dc in each row end. Rotate work, dc in each st of short end; rep from * once more. Join with ss in first st. <96 dc>

Round 2: Ch 1, BPdc in each st around. Join with ss to first st.

Round 3: Ch 1, dc in each st around. Join with ss to first st.

Main Body

Round 4: Ch 1, dc in first st, ch 2, skip 2 sts. *dc in next st, ch 2, skip 2 sts; rep from * around. Join with ss to first st. Pull up loop & remove hook.

Always keep MC to the front.

Attach CC to ch-2 sp after the join.

Round 5: Ch 3 (counts as st), 2tr in same sp, skip a st, *3tr in ch-sp (granny cluster made), skip a st; rep from * around. Join with ss to first st. Pull up loop & remove hook.

Always keep CC to the back.

Pick up MC.

6-7

Round 6: Ch 4 (counts as tr and ch-1), tr in same st. (Vst in next dc from round 4) around. Join with ss to third ch of beg ch-4. Pull up loop & remove hook.

Pick up CC.

Round 7: Working through both thicknesses around, work a sdc through the ch-sp of Vst from previous round and sp between granny clusters, work 2 tr in same sp. *3 tr in next Vst/cluster sp; rep from * around. Join with ss in top of sdc. Pull up loop & remove hook. First part of Vst made in dc from row 4.

Pick up MC.

Round 8 – onwards

Round 8: Ch 4 (counts as tr and ch-1), tr in same st. (Vst in next sp between Vsts from two rows previous) around. Join with ss to third ch of beg ch-4. Pull up loop.

Round 9-40: Rep round 7 & 8 sixteen more times.

Fasten off CC.

With MC

Round 41: Working through both thicknesses, *dc in sp between Vsts and middle tr of granny cluster. 2 dc in Vst and sp between granny clusters; rep from * around. Join with ss in first st.

Round 42-44: St-dc in first st, dc in each st around. Join with ss to first st.

Round 45: SBLO dc in first st, BLO dc in each st around. Fasten off and join with invisible join.

Handle

Make Two

With MC, ch 9

Row 1: Working in back bump, dc in second ch from hook and across. Turn. <8 dc>

Row 2 – 150: Ch 1, dc in each st across. Turn.

Fasten off and sew in both ends.

Attaching Handles

Lay main bag flat and locate the edges.
Fold the short ends of handle in half and lay in the edge fold of the main bag on the inside.Ensure the handle is in line with round 41 and hold in place with binding clips.
Using darning needle and a length of MC, attach to round 41 of main body and bottom of handle.
Working through both thicknesses, push darning needle from inside to outside of the bag, then from the outside to inside working around the path shown in Image N.

Fasten off and sew in ends. Repeat on other side ensuring that handle is not twisted.

Finishing Touches

(Optional)

To add the hardware, locate the central position between handles on both side of the bag opening. Using a sewing needle and MC, sew one side of the snap fastener to your work, working from inside to outside, then repeat for the other popper.
