Mosaic crochet is becoming more and more popular and it’s easy to see why. I feel like it needs to come with a warning before you embark on this new adventure…..it’s addictive! I mean it, once I tried this out I had hundreds of patterns circling around my mind because I was so excited. I’ll be bringing you a mini series of videos to help introduce you to the work of Mosaic crochet. I’ll be beginning with Overlay Mosaic Crochet and will then continue to show you how to:

I did a LOT of research on mosaic crochet before I put this mini series together for you and I really feel like its the perfect point to start when learning this beautiful technique.

You may notice on that list that I have mentioned Overlay and Inset Mosaic Crochet…two different variations. For now though, I just want you to focus on Overlay Mosaic crochet and I’ll explain the differences to you when you get to Part 2 of the mini series.

You may also freak out at the amount of ENDS that you see with mosaic crochet….but PLEASE don’t let that put you off because I’ll also be showing you different options to tackle them!

WHAT IS OVERLAY MOSAIC CROCHET?

To understand Overlay Mosaic Crochet, you need a basic understanding of what Overlay Crochet is.

Simply put: Overlay Crochet uses the FLO (front loops only) or BLO (back loops only) methods to create textured or layered work.

So, Overlay Mosaic Crochet is:

A technique that requires you to work in the BLO and then drop down to pick up the front loop of stitches from lower rows.

This creates textured stitches that lay over the stitches from previous rows and can be used to create wonderfully intricate patterns.

The image below shows you what this technique looks like from the back of your work.

WHAT WILL THIS VIDEO TEACH ME?

This video will introduce you to the basics of Mosaic Crochet, including:

Mosaic Crochet Video:

  • Reading a chart
  • Basic technique
  • Demonstration of pattern – I’ll be demonstrating using a popular Mosaic pattern. Once you get the hang of this, your possibilities will be endless!

MATERIALS

Yarn: In the videos I have used MillaMia Naturally Soft Aran in Stone and Ice. However, as this is a general stitch tutorial any yarn can be used!

Hook: Use the correct hook for your yarn. I have used a 5.5mm

Scissors

Darning Needle

I also recommend you download this file: Mosaic Overlay PDF, so that you can join in with the video.

PATTERN NOTES

Pattern worked row by row. Yarn is tied off at the end of each row.

Each double crochet is worked into the back loop only.

Each ‘drop down’ treble is worked into the front loop only of the stitch 2 rows down.

This was such a great demo of the overlay mosaic pattern. I have been wanting to try it.
I have been crocheting now for over a year (was never a knitter or crocheter) but thanks to all your wonderful videos I am now working on the Om Shanti blanket. I have made a lot of dishcloths with different stitches and a waffle stitch blanket. I am looking forward to using the mosaic stitch to get really creative with colors.
