Learn how to crochet a half granny horizontal hexagon with my free step-by-step pattern. This motif is the key to achieving flat edges when your hexagons are joined in a staggered row layout (like bricks). Without it, your project edges can end up jagged and uneven, but with it, you can create a neatly squared off finish.

Pink horizontal half hexagon granny crochet motif displayed on a white marble surface, surrounded by a wooden-handled crochet hook, gold embroidery scissors, a wooden gauge ruler, and eucalyptus sprigs.

Ways to Use This Stitch

  • Hexagon Blankets: Line the top and bottom rows with horizontal half hexagons to give your blanket a finished, rectangular shape.
  • Crochet Garments: Use half hexagons to shape the neckline or hem of hexie jackets, vests, or cardigans.
  • Home Décor: Incorporate them into table runners, cushion covers, or wall hangings for a clean and balanced look.
  • Bags & Pouches: Add half hexagons to bag flaps or bottoms for a more structured finish.

What Is a Half Hexagon Granny Horizontal?

As the name suggests, this motif is half of a classic granny hexagon, but with a horizontal orientation. That means it’s wider than it is tall, perfect for filling in the top and bottom edges of your hexagon-based creations when the motifs are arranged in rows.

You can think of it as the “bookend” of your hexagon blanket, cardigan, or any modular design, allowing you to square off the top and bottom without distorting the overall shape.
