Yarn: Yarnsmiths Cotton, 100% Cotton, Aran (#4/worsted), 50g (1.75oz), 80m (87yds). Each placemat used approx 135yds.

Slip Stitch(s): ss(s): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.
Chain(s): ch(s): Yarn over, pull through loop on the hook.
Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Treble Crochet(s): tr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Invisible Join: Cut yarn leaving a 15cm tail and thread onto darning needle. Insert under both loops of the first stitch, pull through, then insert back down through centre of the last stitch. Pull snug and weave in the end.

Blocking your work will be important for the placemat pattern to truly show off the pattern. I recommend blocking before adding the border and after.

Gauge & Size

Gauge: 10 sts (measured over row 9) and 8 rows (measured over rows 2-9) per 10cm X 10cm (4in X 4in) after blocking.
Completed Size: H 29cm x W 35cm (11.5in x 13.75in)

Placemat (make 4)

With MC and 4.5mm hook, ch 45.

Row 1: Working in the back bumps of the chain, tr in fourth ch from hook, (missed chs count as tr), *ch 3, sk 3 chs, dc in next 5 sts, ch 3, sk 3 chs, tr in next 3 sts; repeat from * once more. Ch 3, sk 3 chs, dc in next 5 sts, ch 3, sk 3 chs, tr in last 2 sts. Turn. <10 tr, 15 dc, 6 ch-sps>
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as tr), *3 tr in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sk next dc, dc in next 3 sts, ch 3, sk next st, 3 tr in next ch- 3 sp, ch 1; rep from * twice more omitting the final ch-1. Tr in top of ch-3 from previous row. Turn. <20 tr, 9 dc, 8 ch-sps>

Placemat Border

Round 1: Ch 1, *dc in first 2 sts, 3 dc in ch-sp, dc in next 5 sts, (3 dc in ch-sp, dc in next 3 sts. 3 dc in ch-sp, dc in next 5 sts) twice. 3 dc in ch-sp, dc in last 2 sts. Ch 1, rotate to work down row end. Work 3 dc in next three row ends, dc in next 3 row ends. (Work 3 dc in next five row ends, dc in next 3 row ends) across until three row ends remain. Work 3 dc in next three row ends, ch 1, rotate work 90 degrees. Rep from *once more. Join with ss to first st. Turn.
Round 2: Ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in ch-1 sp. *dc in each st to ch-1 sp, (dc, ch 1, dc) in ch-1 sp, rotate work; repeat from * four time omitting final (dc, ch 1, dc). Fasten off and join with invisible join.
Sew in ends.
